brother number 3 is seriously into legos. he has been for about 2 years now. so for christmas we decided to make our own lego table for him to play on. lego tables are usually pretty pricey, and to be honest, we didn't save all that much money on doing it ourselves, maybe 20 bucks or so.
first we bought a kids table from ikea for about $10.00. they come in other colors as well, but we wanted the natural wood color..
they we took laundry bags and cut them how we wanted them.
i then straight stitched the edges, to try to prevent fraying later on. we used a staple gun and stapled the bags to the sides of the table. we left one side of the table open for playing.
I measured the table, then went to Toys R Us and bought the flat Lego pieces to fit on top. They were kinda pricier than I was hoping, even with the Buy 1 Get 1 Half Off sale. trying to find them used, may have been better.
we the measured and cut the pieces how we wanted them using a power saw.
we used liquid nails and spread glue all over the table. we smoothed it down with a spatula so it wouldn't seep up through the creases when we laid the pieces down.
we first laid the big grey piece down first (there was no cutting involved in that piece). we had to attach lego blocks to the edge to fit on the small blue pieces to make sure that it would be evenly spaced out to play on...if that makes sence. if you just glue the flat pieces right next to each other, you won't be able to properly fit lego blocks on there later.
then we glued down the trimmed blue pieces around it. (it would have been nice to just lay the flat pieces on the table with cutting any of them, but the size of table we choose didn't have room to do that.)...
we placed lots of weight on it to dry over night. then...ta-daa!
